Eberl Unfazed by Hoeneß Doubts After Bayern's Double-Winning

Max Eberl has dismissed concerns about his future at Bayern Munich, responding calmly to Uli Hoeneß's public skepticism regarding a contract extension beyond 2027. The sporting director's remarks came shortly after Bayern's emphatic 3-0 victory over VfB Stuttgart in the DFB-Pokal final, securing the Bavarian club's domestic double for the 2024-25 season.

Hoeneß, Bayern's honorary president, had previously told Der Spiegel that he rated Eberl's chances of a new deal at just 60-40, leaving the 52-year-old's position uncertain. Speaking to Sky on Saturday evening, Eberl expressed surprise at the timing and tone of those comments. "I also found it very surprising," he said, acknowledging that while doubts were legitimate, his focus remained on delivering results. "What we've achieved as a team this season is something to be proud of."

Performance Speaks for Itself

Since joining Bayern in March 2024, Eberl has overseen significant success. He orchestrated the appointment of Vincent Kompany as manager, a decision that has already proven transformative. Under Kompany's guidance, Bayern secured the Bundesliga title and cup trophy this season, while also reaching the Champions League semi-finals—only eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain after a thrilling tie.

Eberl emphasized that his track record should speak louder than speculation. "I want to do my job and prove myself through it," he explained. When pressed about Hoeneß's doubts, the sporting director remained measured: "I don't know if that's what he meant either. I'm not too concerned about it at the moment. The numbers are out there now." He noted that the two have maintained regular dialogue, making Hoeneß's public comments all the more surprising.

Contract Talks Set for Late May

Hoeneß, now 74, later offered a more optimistic assessment during an ARD interview. While defending his 60-40 evaluation as his "honest opinion," he added: "Personally, I see things as relatively positive for him." The Bayern supervisory board, which includes Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, plans to reconvene at the end of May to discuss contract renewals for both Eberl and fellow sporting director Christoph Freund, whose agreement also expires in 2027.

With Bayern's domestic dominance and Champions League progression establishing a strong foundation, Eberl's hands-on recruitment and managerial oversight have already justified the confidence placed in him. Whether the supervisory board will offer an extension remains to be seen, but the sporting director's composure in the face of public doubt underscores his professionalism and commitment to the role.
