Hoeneß Contradicts Eberl Over Bayern Munich's Kompany

Uli Hoeneß has publicly challenged Max Eberl's account of how Vincent Kompany became Bayern Munich manager, revealing internal disagreements over the recruitment process following Thomas Tuchel's summer 2024 departure. The Bayern president's comments, made on the day of the club's 3-0 DFB Cup final victory, suggest deeper tensions between the two power brokers at the Bavarian giants.

According to Hoeneß, the decision to pursue Kompany came after a series of high-profile rejections. Julian Nagelsmann, Ralf Rangnick, and Oliver Glasner all turned down the role, leaving Bayern searching for alternatives. Hoeneß credited Karl-Heinz Rummenigge with the decisive intervention: reaching out to Pep Guardiola for his assessment of Kompany, his former Manchester City protégé. This consultation reportedly proved instrumental in moving forward with the Belgian coach's appointment.

The Eberl Disagreement

Eberl's version, shared on ZDF's Aktuelles Sportstudio in late April, attributed the idea to himself rather than Rummenigge. He claimed he had suggested the Guardiola consultation and framed the outcome as a vindication of his judgment. Hoeneß's rebuttal cuts deeper, however. The 74-year-old insists Eberl initially wanted to retain Tuchel despite Bayern's trophy-less 2023-24 campaign—a position Hoeneß, Herbert Hainer, and Rummenigge rejected. "Before that, he would have signed Tuchel. Then we wouldn't be where we are today," Hoeneß stated pointedly.

The tension escalated when Hoeneß publicly expressed doubts about continuing with Eberl, putting the likelihood of a contract extension at "60-40 at the moment." Eberl, whose deal runs until 2027, responded with measured professionalism after Bayern's Berlin triumph. "I want to do my job and prove myself through it," he told Sky Sports, acknowledging that Hoeneß was "entitled to have doubts." The 52-year-old emphasized Bayern's double-winning season as vindication, though he admitted surprise at the timing and method of Hoeneß's criticism.

What Happens Next

The contract extension decision will not be addressed until Bayern's supervisory board meeting in August, meaning several months of uncertainty loom for the sporting director. Eberl took charge of recruitment in March 2024 and has overseen a significant turnaround—from trophyless campaigns under Tuchel to silverware under Kompany. Yet internal credit disputes and questions over who deserves recognition for the managerial pivot suggest power dynamics at Bayern remain volatile, with the club's hierarchy divided over strategy and accountability as the new season approaches.
