Max Eberl faces mounting internal criticism at FC Bayern Munich despite securing high-profile player extensions and backing key signings. According to reports, the sporting director's "soft approach" in negotiations with agents has resulted in inflated wages that concern club leadership ahead of Monday's supervisory board review.
Contract Extensions and Rising Costs
Since arriving at the German record champions, Eberl has locked down long-term deals with pivotal squad members including Joshua Kimmich, Alphonso Davies, Dayot Upamecano, and Jamal Musiala. While these extensions demonstrate his ability to retain talent, internal sources claim the financial commitments have become problematic. The Davies extension has drawn particular scrutiny; the Canadian defender signed a lucrative new contract only to suffer a cruciate ligament tear shortly after, followed by recurring muscle injuries that have limited his availability to just three appearances since February.
Eberl's negotiating style has triggered friction with influential figures at the club. Honorary president Uli Hoeneß previously acknowledged "some friction" with the 52-year-old, characterising him as "quite sensitive" during discussions. Last summer, Hoeneß publicly overruled Eberl's transfer ambitions after Kingsley Coman's departure, forcing the director to pursue loan options rather than permanent signings. Eberl eventually brought in Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea on a record €16.5 million loan deal.
Highs and Strategic Wins
Despite tensions, Eberl has orchestrated moves that strengthen Bayern's competitive position. His conviction secured Michael Olise from Crystal Palace for €53 million in July 2024—a signing Hoeneß credits entirely to Eberl's judgment. The winger has delivered eight goals and thirteen assists across 25 appearances, establishing himself as one of Europe's most dangerous attacking talents. Eberl also championed the appointment of manager Vincent Kompany after the club faced multiple rejections during its coaching search.
The supervisory board convenes Monday to assess executive performance. CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen's contract extension is considered a formality, while Eberl must "prove himself" in the upcoming summer transfer window to secure his future beyond 2027. Reports suggest the relationship between Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund remains strained, described as a "forced marriage" by German media. Freund's own situation remains uncertain pending May discussions.
