FIFA's official statement confirmed that nothing has altered Infantino's course: "The FIFA President announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027. Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election." This defiant posture comes as the organisation grapples with unprecedented fractures across its member associations.
The FFE Collapse and Confederations Revolt
The catalyst for the current civil war within football's governance was Infantino's FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) scheme, a commercial initiative designed to sell minority stakes in World Cup operations to private investors. The proposal triggered an extraordinary alliance of opposition that unified Europe, South America, and other regions against the FIFA leadership.
UEFA member nations declared they would boycott FIFA competitions, stating they "unanimously and unequivocally reject FIFA's proposal." CONMEBOL, South America's confederation, added that commercial decisions "must always serve the interests of football and never take precedence over its essence." Faced with this total blockade, Infantino abandoned the FFE project entirely.
