France weighs joint bid to host 2038 World Cup with Germany

France is considering a joint bid to host the 2038 FIFA World Cup, French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo has confirmed. The country last hosted the men's tournament in 1998.

Diallo discussed the prospect in an interview with Ouest-France newspaper. With the World Cup now expanded to 48 teams, he indicated that talks with the German Football Association are progressing. "Our relations with the German Football Association are excellent, and this would be a wonderful symbol of bringing a new spirit to European national-team football, and indeed to the whole continent as well," Diallo said.

He suggested a third European nation could potentially join a multi-country bid, though he did not name any candidate. Diallo acknowledged the complexity of such a project, noting it would require support from public authorities and the French government.

Any formal French campaign depends on the country's political situation. Diallo indicated that the timeline for an official bid would align with France's presidential elections in 2027.
