Crystal Palace Faces WSL Points Deduction Over Substitution

Crystal Palace's debut season in the Women's Super League has been marred by an administrative crisis following their 1-0 victory over Everton. The Eagles now face a formal WSL investigation that could result in points deduction, financial penalties, or even a fixture replay after breaching substitution regulations during their opening match.

Lexi Lloyd-Smith secured the win with a first-half goal, but Palace's celebrations were short-lived. During the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time, manager Jo Potter made a fourth substitution change by introducing Kirsty Howat for Shannon O'Brien. Under WSL competition rules, teams are limited to three separate substitution windows per match, excluding half-time. Potter had already used three windows to bring on Abbie Larkin, Ashleigh Weerden, and Allyson Swaby before this final change.

Investigation and Potential Sanctions

The league confirmed the breach in an official statement: "Crystal Palace used a fourth substitution opportunity during a fourth stoppage in play, when the rules permit a maximum of three substitution opportunities per match." The case will now be referred to an independent tribunal, which has broad powers to enforce competition integrity.

Possible penalties include:

  • Official warning or written reprimand
  • Financial fine
  • Points deduction from their opening victory
  • Complete fixture replay, nullifying the 1-0 result
  • Other sporting sanctions deemed appropriate

The officiating team, led by referee Megan Wilson, has already faced consequences for failing to enforce the rule. The entire match officials group has been stood down from upcoming WSL fixtures as a result of the oversight.

Palace earned promotion to the top flight after finishing as runners-up in the Championship last season. They now face Arsenal in a short trip this Sunday, though the uncertainty surrounding their opening-day result adds extra pressure to their maiden WSL campaign.
