Beth Mead Leaves Arsenal After Nine Years as Gunners Confirm

Beth Mead will depart Arsenal when her contract expires this summer, ending a nine-year association with the north London club. The England international joined the Gunners in 2017 and became one of the division's most influential forwards, helping the team claim six major honours including the Champions League and multiple WSL titles.

Mead's exit comes after months of speculation linking her with potential moves away from the Emirates. Manchester City, the newly crowned WSL champions, emerged as a likely destination given their interest and the fact that Mead's partner, former Arsenal forward Vivianne Miedema, plays there. Reports suggested City would offer a longer contract than Arsenal was prepared to provide.

Legacy and Impact at Arsenal

The 31-year-old winger departs having made 258 appearances, scoring 83 goals and creating more assists than any other player in WSL history. Despite limited starting opportunities this season—just 10 league starts—Mead remains joint-fifth for direct goal involvements across the competition and remains a decisive figure in European competition. Her trophy haul includes one WSL title, three League Cups, the Champions League, and the inaugural FIFA Women's Champions Cup.

Arsenal's director of women's football Clare Wheatley paid tribute to the departing forward: "Beth has made a huge contribution to our football club over nine years and will go down in history as one of our best forwards and a legend of the club."

Additional Arsenal Departures Confirmed

Mead is not the only player bidding farewell to the Gunners. Defenders Laia Codina and Victoria Pelova will also leave when their contracts expire. Pelova joined in January 2023 but saw her progress derailed by a serious ACL injury in summer 2024 that sidelined her for nine months. Codina, a 2023 Women's World Cup final winner with Spain, struggled to establish herself with limited playing time across three seasons despite Arsenal's centre-back injury concerns.

Both defenders contributed to Arsenal's recent silverware, winning the Champions League and Champions Cup, with Codina also lifting a League Cup. Meanwhile, Kim Little, Leah Williamson, Stina Blackstenius and Steph Catley have all recently agreed new contract extensions, signalling the club's commitment to retaining their core squad. Arsenal will honour these departing players during their final home fixture against Everton on Wednesday night before concluding their campaign at Liverpool on Saturday.
