Barcelona have completed the signing of defender Martina Fernández from Everton, marking the Catalan centre-back's return to Spain after 18 months in England's Women's Super League. The 21-year-old has joined on a contract until summer 2029 after Barcelona activated a buy-back clause for approximately €150,000.
Fernández departs the English club having established herself as a regular fixture in Everton's defence, appearing in 25 WSL matches during her time at Goodison Park. Her departure comes as part of Barcelona's strategic rebuild of their backline, with the club facing defensive changes following Mapi León's exit and Laia Aleixandri's ongoing recovery from injury.
A Familiar Face Returns Home
The defender first emerged through Barcelona's academy system, making her senior debut during the 2021/22 season at just 17 years old under then-coach Jonatan Giráldez. During that initial spell, she accumulated 22 appearances, starting in 12 La Liga encounters. A meniscus injury disrupted her progress in the 2024/25 campaign, prompting her move to Everton on loan, which eventually became permanent while Barcelona retained control over her future.
Her spell in England brought valuable Premier League experience and tactical maturity that should benefit manager Pere Romeu's defensive setup. Fernández returns to a squad with clear needs at centre-back, offering depth and versatility as Barcelona pursue domestic and European honours.
