Derksen criticized the intense reaction to the midfield collision, which he characterized as a natural occurrence in contact football rather than a disciplinary offense. "The whole of the Netherlands was saying it was a red card, with people using terms like 'attempted murder,'" Derksen said. "But I thought it was not even a yellow card. It was a typical collision that occurs in a contact sport." The incident sparked heated debate among fans and analysts, with many questioning referee Van der Eijk's decision-making.
Both Players Going for the Ball
According to Derksen's analysis, both players were entirely focused on winning possession and collided purely by chance. "Both players were focused on the ball, deliberately went for the ball and met each other in midfield entirely by chance," he explained. "Van Bommel did not see that player coming, and Bouwman did not see him either. That happens in football." Derksen noted that Van Bommel only detected his opponent at the final moment, instinctively turning his shoulder to protect himself during the unavoidable collision.
The incident appeared far worse than the circumstances warranted, according to Derksen. "It is very sad and it looked very bad, but it was not a foul. It was a chance collision that occurs in every contact sport," he emphasized. The analyst praised the on-field official's judgment, calling Van der Eijk's handling of the situation "an excellent decision." Derksen has also taken aim at the Dutch football referees' chief, criticizing comments suggesting the referee made a major mistake. "Only laymen come to that conclusion," Derksen argued. "If you have played football yourself, you understand how something like that can happen."
