Klaassen Slams Van Bommel Tackle as Red Card in Ajax vs PSV

Davy Klaassen voiced sharp criticism of Ruben van Bommel's challenge on Aaron Bouwman during PSV's 3-1 victory at Ajax on Saturday, describing the incident as a clear sending-off that referee Sander van der Eijk inexplicably overlooked. The tackle in the 79th minute sparked immediate reaction from the Ajax bench, with Klaassen sprinting onto the pitch to confront the official about the decision.

"I went in to keep everything calm," Klaassen told ESPN after the match. "I saw that Van Bommel was late and crashed straight into Aaron. For me, this is nothing but a red card." The midfielder's frustration was evident when describing his exchange with Van der Eijk. "I saw Aaron lying there and I said to the referee: 'What are we going to do? What is this?' But he called it unfortunate." Klaassen's cynical tone underscored his disbelief at the official's reasoning, with the ESPN studio panel also concluding that a red card was the appropriate sanction.

More Than Officiating at Stake

Despite the controversial moment dominating post-match discourse, Klaassen acknowledged that poor execution rather than refereeing decisions cost Ajax the result. "I think we mainly let ourselves down in the first half. We get two or three really big chances. Going in 1-2 down at half-time was not a fair reflection of the game," he reflected. The midfielder emphasized the broader context: Ajax must close the gap on PSV in the Eredivisie title race by converting such opportunities into victories.

"Last year we were very poor, now we have become a lot better. But we have to start winning these kinds of matches if we want to finish above PSV. We now have three more points dropped, and we will have to make those up," Klaassen said, highlighting the mounting importance of consistency as the season progresses.

Analyst Hugo Borst echoed concerns about the tackle's severity, stating the incident overshadowed what was otherwise a high-quality encounter. Borst warned that Van Bommel's challenge represented "absurd behaviour" that could damage the PSV midfielder's reputation unless he addresses his discipline. The controversy adds another layer to the competitive tension between the Dutch giants, with Ajax now facing pressure to bounce back and reclaim their advantage in the title hunt.
