Johan Derksen has defended Ruben van Bommel following the PSV midfielder's heavy collision with Aaron Bouwman during the Ajax clash, arguing the incident was neither a foul nor deserving of a yellow card. The Dutch football pundit's perspective starkly contradicts widespread national outrage over the tackle in Eredivisie play.

Speaking on his podcast Greetings from Grolloo, Derksen expressed frustration at the hysterical reaction to the midfield collision. He emphasised that both players were legitimately competing for the ball when they collided entirely by accident, a scenario that occurs routinely in football. "The whole of the Netherlands is saying it was a red card," Derksen noted, adding that some commentators had used inflammatory language like "attempted murder."
Derksen's core argument centres on unavoidability. Neither Van Bommel nor Bouwman saw each other approaching; both were focused solely on winning possession. The PSV player only glimpsed Bouwman at the final moment and instinctively turned his shoulder to shield himself—a natural self-preservation reaction rather than a deliberate challenge. "You cannot blame Van Bommel for it at all, because he did not see that player," Derksen explained. "And Bouwman did not see him. That happens in football."
Criticism of Officials' Comments
Derksen praised referee Van der Eijk for making "an excellent decision" by not dismissing the PSV midfielder. However, he directed sharp criticism at the Dutch football referees' chief from Zeist, who published an article in De Telegraaf claiming the official had made a major error and that a red card should have been issued.
The veteran commentator dismissed such conclusions as the product of inexperience. "Only laymen come to that conclusion," he argued. "If you have played football yourself, you understand how something like that can happen." Derksen's assessment reflects a deeper principle in football refereeing: distinguishing between accidents that occur within the natural flow of the game and genuine fouls involving recklessness or excessive force.
