Jürgen Klopp's appointment as Germany's national team coach has raised expectations of an immediate turnaround, but former Bayern Munich boss Oliver Kahn has tempered enthusiasm about a swift revival. Speaking at the Bastian Schweinsteiger Cup charity golf tournament, Kahn warned that restoring the German football machine will prove far more complex than many supporters anticipate.
Kahn, who spent decades at Bayern Munich as both goalkeeper and chairman, believes the DFB's structural challenges run deeper than tactical adjustments alone can solve. "Personally, I don't believe it is as easy as many imagine. The problems may well run deeper," Kahn told BR24. He emphasised that Klopp must first establish a philosophical foundation for the team's development. "What kind of players do they want to develop over the next few years? What kind of players do they want to have at all? How do they want to play football?" he asked, highlighting fundamental questions that require clear answers before success can follow.
Klopp's Experience and Challenges Ahead
Despite his reservations about timeline expectations, Kahn acknowledged Klopp's credentials. "He is a very experienced man who can certainly make a difference," the former goalkeeper stated. Former German international Bastian Schweinsteiger shared a more optimistic view, calling the 59-year-old coach "the right choice for the current situation." Schweinsteiger recognised the scale of the task but expressed confidence in Klopp's ability to handle it, noting that he is "an excellent coach."
Klopp replaces Julian Nagelsmann, who departed following Germany's embarrassing round of 32 elimination at the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign against Paraguay. The new manager takes his first training session in September, with Nations League fixtures beginning on 24 September against the Netherlands in Amsterdam. Four matches across two weeks will provide Klopp's first opportunity to implement his vision and demonstrate whether a rapid rebuild is achievable or if structural overhaul demands patience.
