Lennart Karl Nearly Joined Stuttgart Before Bayern Switch in

Lennart Karl came remarkably close to joining VfB Stuttgart in early 2022, according to youth coach Markus Fiedler, before ultimately choosing FC Bayern Munich. The 18-year-old centre-back has since become one of the Bundesliga's most exciting young talents, establishing himself as a core member of Bavaria's first-team squad after his academy breakthrough.

Fiedler revealed to Münchner Merkur that Karl was "already halfway to joining" Stuttgart's U17 programme during discussions in early 2022. The young defender had recently returned to his former club, Viktoria Aschaffenburg, after spending four and a half years at Eintracht Frankfurt's academy. "We had some good discussions, but he then decided to join FC Bayern," Fiedler explained. The Stuttgart coach noted that Karl's parents were supportive of the move, yet the teenager's childhood loyalty to Bayern ultimately proved decisive. "The lad has been a Bayern fan since he was a child; he slept in Bayern bed linen. So it was almost impossible to convince him on an emotional level."

From Academy Star to First-Team Fixture

Karl completed his transfer to Munich in summer 2022 and quickly climbed the youth ladder. By April 2025, manager Vincent Kompany promoted him to the senior squad, and Karl made his professional debut at the Club World Cup that June. The defensive prospect has since flourished, recording 39 appearances across all competitions, accumulating 1,970 minutes alongside nine goals and eight assists—an impressive return for a young centre-back.

Fiedler's pursuit of Karl did not end at Stuttgart. After a decade with the Swabians, he moved to second-tier Magdeburg and attempted to sign the prospect on loan ahead of the 2024-25 season. "We were all aware of his potential; before his breakthrough at Bayern, we thought a loan might be an option for his first steps as a professional," said Fiedler. Karl remained in Munich, where he has secured a Bundesliga title and is positioned to compete in the DFB Cup final against Stuttgart on Saturday, the very club that once pursued him.

With World Cup selection looming, Karl's rise from near-miss transfer to Bayern cornerstone represents a significant validation of his childhood faith in the club's project.
