Lautaro Martinez Commits Future to Inter, Ends Barcelona

Lautaro Martinez has firmly shut the door on any possibility of leaving Inter Milan, declaring his intention to retire at San Siro and rejecting overtures from Barcelona. The 28-year-old Argentine captain made his position crystal clear in an extensive interview, stating that he cannot imagine himself playing anywhere else and will stay at the Nerazzurri as long as the club wants him.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Martinez said: "No doubt I would like to retire at this club. It's hard for me to imagine myself anywhere else these days. You never know in football but if they don't kick me out, I'm staying here." The World Cup winner's emphatic declaration effectively terminates Barcelona's recent attempts to lure him to Camp Nou, where manager Hansi Flick had viewed him as a potential alternative to Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez.

Barcelona's Interest Fades

Barcelona's interest in acquiring the Inter captain represents a continuation of long-standing admiration. The Catalan club had previously offered a lucrative €12 million-per-season deal in June 2020, but financial difficulties prevented that move from materialising. With newly-crowned La Liga champions Barcelona recently renewing their approach, Martinez's public commitment effectively ends that chapter.

The striker's resolve to remain in Milan has been strengthened by his recent contract extension. In August 2024, Martinez signed a five-year deal that made him Serie A's highest-paid player, keeping him bound to Inter until June 2029. Since joining from Racing Club in 2018, he has made over 350 appearances for the club, becoming an indispensable figure in their midfield and attack.

Strong Season Performance

Martinez's commitment comes on the back of another successful season. The Argentine international contributed 17 goals and six assists across 29 Serie A matches as Inter secured the Scudetto. He recently netted in Inter's Coppa Italia final victory over Lazio and remains available for the season finale against Bologna on May 23.

Interestingly, Martinez also revealed his plans for life beyond football. "I will not stay in football after retirement, it's not an atmosphere I like. I will disappear and they won't know of me," he told the Italian newspaper. With his future now secured in Milan, Inter's hierarchy can focus entirely on sustained success without worrying about external vultures circling their talisman.
