Joao Pedro has been named Chelsea's Player of the Year for the 2025-26 season, according to former Blues defender Gary Cahill. The Portuguese forward, signed from Brighton for £60 million in summer 2025, has delivered 20 goals across all competitions despite a turbulent campaign marked by managerial upheaval at Stamford Bridge.
Cahill, who spent eight years at Chelsea and won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, Europa League and Champions League during his tenure, praised Pedro's versatility and impact. "For me, probably Joao Pedro," Cahill said in an exclusive interview. "He's been the standout performer for Chelsea this season in terms of being asked to play in different positions, whether it be the number 10, the 9, sometimes on the side of the front three. He's added goals and assists to his game and he's just generally a top player."
A Season of Transitions
Chelsea's 2025-26 campaign has tested the club's resolve. The Blues captured the FIFA Club World Cup during the summer but endured significant managerial disruption. Enzo Maresca was sacked at the start of 2026, followed by Liam Rosenior after 23 matches. Interim boss Calum McFarlane guided the team to the FA Cup final at Wembley, where they fell short against Manchester City. Xabi Alonso has been announced as the next manager ahead of the new season.
While Pedro edges out fellow contenders Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez for the award, the Argentine midfielder has impressed with 14 goals in all competitions. Cahill drew comparisons between Fernandez and Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, noting that achieving Lampard's goal-scoring consistency from midfield would elevate the 25-year-old's game. "You show me a midfield player now that gets 20 goals a season as standard," Cahill observed. "It's worth its weight in gold."
Chelsea remain serious contenders for major silverware despite the managerial turbulence. As Xabi Alonso prepares to reshape the squad ahead of the summer transfer window, Pedro's consistency and flexibility suggest he will play a pivotal role in the club's next chapter.
