Manchester United had proposed hosting the match at Old Trafford, but the FA rejected the proposal after City claimed the Etihad Stadium was unavailable due to ongoing construction work. Fletcher and United's leadership felt the modest stadium lacked the prestige befitting a major cup final. Despite City claiming the fixture was sold out, visible empty seats in sections designated for the home side only deepened United's concerns about the event's presentation and atmosphere.
Tensions Over Trophy Ceremony and Scheduling
Fletcher's frustration boiled over during the post-match medal distribution, where he was observed arguing with FA officials as EFL chairman Rick Parry prepared to hand out honours. The United coach objected to how individual players and coaches from City received special recognition—a departure from standard cup final protocol. "It's an FA competition and it felt like it was a Man City competition," Fletcher said. "That doesn't happen in cup finals. I respect the opposition, but not when Man City take over an FA Youth Cup."
Beyond the venue dispute, Fletcher highlighted scheduling chaos affecting youth football. United's under-21 side must face Brighton in the Premier League 2 play-off final at the Amex Stadium less than 48 hours after the Youth Cup final. This compressed fixture list means several academy players will miss the Brighton match due to recovery and availability constraints. "We're dealing with a lot of difficult dynamics just now in terms of these youth fixtures," Fletcher explained, adding that the Premier League and FA require fundamental changes to protect the integrity of historic competitions. While acknowledging that City's side performed better on the pitch and deserved their victory, Fletcher maintained that the entire event organisation fell short of standards expected for a national final.
