Fletcher Slams Man City Over FA Youth Cup Final Celebrations

Darren Fletcher expressed significant frustration following Manchester United's 2-1 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Youth Cup final, criticizing the scale and nature of City's trophy celebration at the Joie Stadium. A late goal from Reigan Heskey secured victory for City, but Fletcher's post-match comments focused less on the result and more on what he perceived as an excessive ceremonial atmosphere that felt more like a "Manchester City parade" than a competitive FA competition final.

Fletcher's Grievances with the Ceremony

The United Under-18s boss took particular issue with the trophy presentation format, where individual player and coaching staff names were announced during the ceremony—a practice he claimed does not occur at standard cup finals. Fletcher was visibly present during the presentation discussions with FA officials, signaling his concerns about the event's management. "Not only to watch a team lift a trophy, but to be a Man City parade when it's an FA Youth Cup final. I've never heard individual coaches be shouted out, every individual player be shouted out," Fletcher stated. "That doesn't happen in cup finals."

Fletcher acknowledged that Manchester City's academy manager operates with professionalism and respect, but he felt the broader circumstances surrounding the fixture—particularly the venue decision and ceremonial arrangements—compromised the integrity of what should remain an FA competition rather than a showcase owned by one club. He expressed disappointment with the FA's handling of multiple aspects, from the location selection to the presentation protocols.

The Venue Controversy

The final's staging at City's 7,000-capacity academy ground rather than a traditional neutral or larger venue added to Fletcher's frustration. Manchester City had cited ongoing construction work at the Etihad Stadium as the reason for moving the fixture, declining United's offer to host the match at Old Trafford. This decision drew criticism from Manchester United supporter groups before kick-off, with representatives calling the arrangement "a disgrace."

Despite the defeat, Fletcher recognized City's quality. "The best team won, compliments to them," he conceded. However, he maintained that the cumulative effect of venue selection, ceremonial excess, and fixture scheduling—with United's Under-21s match scheduled just 48 hours later—created an unfair competitive environment. Fletcher suggested the FA should reassert control over youth cup proceedings to preserve their historical significance and competitive neutrality.
