Obi was 16 when Arsenal presented the opportunity to continue his development at the north London academy. Bayern Munich had also expressed interest in the talented forward, but the Denmark Under-21 international ultimately chose Old Trafford. His decision was vindicated early when he earned eight senior appearances during the 2024/25 campaign under Ruben Amorim's management, suggesting a smooth pathway to the elite level.
However, the reality has proven tougher this season. The 18-year-old has featured in the matchday squad only once—as an unused substitute against Wolves in December 2025—highlighting the brutal competition for places in United's forward ranks. This sharp drop-off might concern onlookers, but Fletcher sees the bigger picture.
Attitude Over Appearances
Fletcher praised Obi's mentality during a recent assessment, noting the striker's willingness to play in youth fixtures when senior opportunities dried up. When an Under-21 game was cancelled, Obi proactively requested involvement in the Under-18s clash against Manchester City in February, demonstrating the maturity Fletcher values in academy players.
"An Under-21 game was cancelled the day before and Chido messaged me, asking to play," Fletcher told BBC Sport. "I thought it was amazing for Chido to want to play, to not think the Under-18s is beneath him in any way. That just shows how mature he is."
Yet Fletcher's warning carries weight: stepping into United's senior setup and maintaining a starting berth requires far more than academy success.
