A 35-year-old German amateur footballer named Marius was arrested on September 1 on suspicion of fatally poisoning his 30-year-old team-mate Philipp during an end-of-season club trip. The victim, who played for TuS Rockenberg, fell critically ill in Dresden and died in hospital on June 16, 2025, from septic multi-organ failure caused by poisoning.
Investigators initially suspected severe food poisoning after the squad consumed fish during the trip before forensic evidence revealed deliberate poisoning. Senior public prosecutor Thomas Hauburger stated: "We assume that this was an act of revenge." The precise motive remains under investigation, with authorities continuing to establish the full sequence of events that led to Philipp's death.
