Traore's Pedigree and Experience
Traore's career spans some of football's biggest stages. Beginning at Chelsea as a teenager, he developed his craft in the Eredivisie with Vitesse Arnhem and Ajax, where he featured in a Europa League final. His three seasons at Lyon established him as a left-footed winger capable of both creating and finishing chances. A £17 million move to Aston Villa in 2020 saw him make over 62 appearances and score 10 goals during his four-year tenure at Villa Park, making him well-acquainted with the West Midlands.
On the international stage, Traore has earned 91 caps for Burkina Faso and recently captained his nation at the Africa Cup of Nations. This leadership experience and pedigree are expected to strengthen Wolves' dressing room as they navigate the competitive Championship.
Filling a Tactical Gap
Head coach Cesar Peixoto outlined why Traore addressed a specific need. "It's a position we wanted and he's a good player to improve the team, one more option," Peixoto explained. "He has the right characteristics—good one-versus-one, strong, left-footed to score or assist and fast to attack the space." The manager acknowledged that Traore requires time to build fitness and learn the tactical system after working independently, but views him as crucial to their Premier League promotion bid.
Wolves currently sit ninth in the Championship with eight points from five matches. After eight years in the Premier League, their relegation last season triggered a strategic overhaul. Peixoto emphasized the demanding nature of the division: "The Championship is very tough, so we need two players in each position to manage the games."
