Alexandre Pato, the former Chelsea and Brazil forward, has received regulatory clearance alongside his investment consortium to acquire a significant shareholding in Northampton Town. The Independent Football Regulator and English Football League approved the deal, marking a major development for the League Two club as it seeks financial recovery following relegation from League One.
Pato, now 37 and retired from professional football, joins forces with Sports Alpha Capital and Gemcorp Capital in the bid to stabilize the Cobblers' finances. The consortium's involvement comes after months of negotiations that began in April, following the group's previous discussions with Colchester United. Club chairman Kelvin Thomas emphasized the rigorous nature of the approval process, which involved extensive financial and background scrutiny before regulators gave the green light.
Brazilian Investment Brings Hope to Northampton
Thomas expressed optimism that Pato's Brazilian heritage and football expertise would inject fresh energy into the struggling club. "With significant Brazilian representation within the group we also hope they might bring a little Brazilian excitement and flair with them," Thomas said. The investment addresses Northampton's pressing need for financial stability after the club reported pre-tax losses approaching £3 million during their difficult League One campaign last season, when they finished bottom of the division.
Pato's career spanned elite European clubs including Villarreal, alongside stints at São Paulo, Corinthians, and Orlando City. His transition into club ownership represents a new chapter as he applies his football knowledge from the boardroom rather than the pitch. The incoming capital will erase the club's existing debt and establish stronger financial foundations moving forward.
Squad Rebuild Underway at Sixfields
Manager Chris Hogg, appointed in May, continues construction of a competitive League Two squad following relegation. The club has already brought in 13 summer signings, including striker Matty Warhurst from Manchester City, as they prepare for the challenge ahead. Documentation and final transaction details remain in progress, with full investment structure information expected upon completion of the formal acquisition process.
