Andrea Pirlo has been appointed as Italy's head coach after the Italian Football Federation exhausted a series of high-profile targets over the past week. New technical director Paolo Maldini and his deputy Leonardo pursued several marquee names before settling on the former Juventus manager, signalling a fresh direction for the Azzurri following their recent struggles.
The search for Italy's next leader began ambitiously. The federation initially targeted Pep Guardiola, attempting to lure the Manchester City manager to restructure Italy's national team setup at all levels. When that proved impossible, Carlo Ancelotti emerged as a serious candidate, but the veteran coach opted to honour his contract with the Brazilian Football Federation through 2030 rather than take on the demanding Italy job.
Thiago Motta Says No to Italy Role
Maldini and Leonardo then turned their attention to Thiago Motta, the 43-year-old tactician who was sacked by Juventus in March 2025 after a disappointing tenure. The former PSG youth academy coach and Bologna manager fits the profile the federation was seeking—a progressive, European-educated strategist capable of modernising Italian football. However, Motta declined the opportunity, prioritising a return to club management over taking on a national team responsibility at this stage of his career.
Reports suggest Motta felt the complicated landscape of Italian football and the scale of the rebuilding task were not compelling enough to leave him idle. Since his acrimonious departure from Juventus, where he earned €5 million net annually, he has rejected multiple offers from both domestic and international clubs, preferring to wait for a project that excites him at club level rather than commit to the international sphere.
Baldini's Candidacy Damaged by Public Remarks
Another potential candidate, Silvio Baldini, the current Under-21 coach who stepped in as interim manager for friendlies against Greece and Luxembourg in June, fell away from contention. Lega Serie A reportedly opposed his appointment after Baldini's recent public comments in which he described club presidents as "crooks" and prisoners of agent interests. The outburst effectively ended his chances of leading the senior national team, despite his experience in the federation system.
With Guardiola, Ancelotti, and Motta all declining the role, and Baldini's candidacy undermined by political opposition, Maldini and Leonardo moved forward with Pirlo. The appointment represents a calculated gamble on a manager who understands modern football's demands while remaining available and committed to the project. Pirlo is expected to finalise his departure from Qatari club Al-Arabi—where his contract runs until June 2027—and sign a deal keeping him with Italy through 2030, beginning what could be a decisive period for Italian football's competitive future.
