Maldini confirmed that Pep Guardiola remains the federation's primary target following a meeting in Barcelona last week. The former Manchester City coach, who earned €23 million annually at the Premier League club, represents the blueprint for transformation many within Italian football desire. However, Guardiola's decision hinges less on financial terms than on personal circumstances. The Catalan tactician has repeatedly expressed his wish to step back and spend quality time with his family in Barcelona, making the Italy position a life choice rather than a career upgrade.
Alternative Candidates Take Shape
Should Guardiola decline, the federation has identified several contingencies. Maldini has signalled strong interest in Andrea Pirlo, the Juventus legend whose coaching career, while unspectacular so far, aligns with the federation's vision for renewal through familiar names.
