Josko Gvardiol has emerged as a potential target for Bayern Munich this summer, according to speculation from legendary German international Lothar Matthäus. The Manchester City defender, who joined the Premier League club from RB Leipzig for €90 million in 2023, could make a surprising return to the Bundesliga if Bayern decide to strengthen their backline.
Matthäus claimed on Sky that Bayern have already initiated informal discussions about the Croatian international. "I have my eye on a player and I've heard that Bayern have already made initial enquiries. A former Bundesliga player from Leipzig who currently plays for Manchester City, a left-back/centre-back," the German legend revealed before the club's match against Cologne. At 24, Gvardiol has established himself as a key player at City, though a summer departure would represent a significant financial undertaking given his long-term contract until 2028.
What Makes Gvardiol Attractive to Bayern?
Bayern already boast a formidable defensive partnership with Jonathan Tah and Dayot Upamecano, but Gvardiol offers unique technical qualities. His naturally strong left foot—a trait neither Tah nor Upamecano possesses—combined with his versatility to operate at left-back, could provide valuable tactical flexibility. The Croatian made 87 appearances for Leipzig between 2021 and 2023 before his move to the Premier League, giving him intimate knowledge of Bundesliga football.
However, significant obstacles remain. Gvardiol is accustomed to regular first-team football and may resist a move where he faces a genuine challenge for a starting berth. His €90 million purchase price means any transfer fee would be substantial, and City show little indication of letting him depart. A breakthrough could only materialise if Min-jae Kim departs the club, creating an opening in Bayern's centre-back rotation.
Kane Secures Fourth Consecutive Top-Scorer Crown
In brighter news for Bayern, Harry Kane cemented his legacy by claiming a fourth consecutive Bundesliga golden boot. The 32-year-old's 36 goals in the 2024-25 season equalled his tally from 2023-24, making him the first player in the league's history to achieve this honour four times consecutively. Kane's hat-trick against Cologne secured the award, underscoring his dominance since arriving from Tottenham in 2023.
Kane has now scored 25+ goals in each of his three Bundesliga seasons—another unprecedented achievement. His consistent excellence has been central to Bayern's recent success, and any squad modifications must account for his creative needs in attack. As the club looks to refresh their defensive options this summer, maintaining Kane's supply line remains a paramount concern.
