Bayern Munich Target Man City Defender Gvardiol in Summer

Bayern Munich are actively pursuing Josko Gvardiol, the Manchester City defender, as the Bundesliga champions plan a defensive overhaul ahead of next season. German football legend Lothar Matthaus confirmed that initial inquiries have already been made regarding the 24-year-old Croatian international, who spent his formative years at RB Leipzig before joining the Premier League champions.

Matthaus revealed his insight during a Sky Deutschland appearance, highlighting Gvardiol's versatility as a crucial asset. "A former Bundesliga player from Leipzig, currently playing for Manchester City, left-back, can also play in the centre. His name is Gvardiol," the Bayern Munich icon stated, signalling the defender's suitability for multiple positions in the backline. The comments align with reports that Bayern representatives have made contact with Gvardiol's camp to gauge his receptiveness to a potential move back to Germany.

Gvardiol's Status at Manchester City

Since arriving at the Etihad for €90 million in 2023, Gvardiol has become a regular fixture under Pep Guardiola's management. However, his current season has been interrupted by injury, with a fractured tibia in January limiting him to just 17 Premier League appearances. Despite these setbacks, he remains highly regarded as one of Europe's finest defenders, and Manchester City are preparing a new contract extension to secure his long-term future beyond his current deal that expires in 2028.

Bayern's Defensive Reconstruction

Bayern's pursuit of Gvardiol reflects a broader strategy to reshape their defence under manager Vincent Kompany. The backline faces several uncertainties this summer: Alphonso Davies continues battling injury concerns, Hiroki Ito's fitness remains questionable, and Kim Min-jae has fallen down the pecking order. Gvardiol's ability to operate both as a left-back and centre-back makes him an ideal solution for these structural issues. Jonathan Tah and Dayot Upamecano currently form Bayern's preferred central pairing, yet versatile reinforcement could strengthen squad depth considerably.

Real Madrid has also emerged as a potential rival for Gvardiol's signature following their trophyless 2024-25 campaign. The Spanish giants are planning significant squad changes, with questions surrounding Antonio Rüdiger's future as his contract approaches expiration. Competition from multiple elite clubs will likely intensify the race for Gvardiol this transfer window, making the coming weeks crucial for Bayern's recruitment plans.
