Kompany Must Keep Bayern's Attacking Identity, Says Matthaus

Lothar Matthaus has defended Vincent Kompany's attacking philosophy at Bayern Munich, urging the manager to maintain his high-octane style despite the Bavarian club's Champions League exit. The German legend believes Bayern's entertaining brand of football should not be sacrificed, even after conceding six goals across two legs against Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals.

Bayern's European campaign ended in a 6-5 aggregate defeat, exposing defensive frailties that have plagued the side throughout the season. High-scoring Bundesliga matches against Mainz (4-3) and Heidenheim (3-3) revealed a backline struggling to balance attacking ambition with tactical discipline. Yet Matthaus remains convinced the club should not abandon its principles to chase defensive stability.

Matthaus Backs Bayern's Attacking Blueprint

The record-holding German international acknowledged the defensive cost of Bayern's approach but emphasized the broader success achieved this season. "With such an attacking style of play, you can't defend everything, of course," Matthaus explained. "They've conceded a lot of goals, but they're still very successful and are on the verge of winning the double. They've reached the Champions League semi-finals."

Bayern's second-leg collapse saw Ousmane Dembele strike early at the Allianz Arena, and despite a late equaliser from Harry Kane, the aggregate deficit proved insurmountable. Rather than view this as evidence of flawed tactics, Matthaus celebrated the excitement Bayern have generated across all competitions this term. "FC Bayern stands for spectacular football, and they've shown that this year. I wouldn't deviate from that approach," he added, highlighting how the attacking football has thrilled supporters consistently.

With the Bundesliga title already secured, Bayern must refocus on securing a domestic double. Kompany's side faces Wolfsburg and Koln in final league fixtures before confronting Stuttgart in the DFB-Pokal final on May 23. The trophy opportunity remains within reach, and Matthaus's endorsement suggests Bayern's philosophy of attacking football need not be compromised to chase silverware.
