CAF 2026 African Player Award: seven Arab nominees dominate shortlist of ten

CAF has announced the ten nominees for its 2026 award for the best player based in Africa. The shortlist is heavily weighted toward Arab nations, with seven of the ten candidates from Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and Sudan.

Egypt contributes two players: Mohamed Shehata, a midfielder at Zamalek, and Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet, formerly of Al Ahly and now at Saudi Arabia's Al-Riyadh.

Morocco supplies three nominees: Mohamed Rabie Hrimat, who moved from AS FAR to Qatar's Al-Shamal; Mounir Chouiar of Renaissance Berkane; and Soufiane El Moudane of Olympic Safi.

Algeria are represented by Abdenour Belhocini of CR Belouizdad and Ahmed Kendouci of USM Alger. Sudan completes the Arab contingent with Abdelraouf Yacoub of Al-Hilal.

The sole non-Arab nominee is Juliso Modau of South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns.
