Aston Villa's unbeaten start to the Champions League campaign ended in a 3-0 defeat to Barcelona at Camp Nou, with goals from Lamine Yamal and a Raphinha brace condemning the Premier League side to their first European loss.
Yamal opened the scoring after just seven minutes, capitalizing on a defensive mix-up involving Joao Gomes following pressure from Pedri. Raphinha added two more goals in the second half to seal a comprehensive victory that halted Villa's three-match winning streak in the competition.
Manager Unai Emery acknowledged the scale of the challenge but refused to single out Gomes for the early error, emphasizing that playing out from the back remains central to his tactical approach. "Joao Gomes started not very confidently with the ball, not only for the error he made but that was part of our style, so I'm not blaming him," Emery said. He noted the intensity of Barcelona's pressing and framed the defeat as a valuable learning experience.
Emery stressed the need for improved finishing. "We needed to be more demanding of ourselves in scoring chances," he said. "The 3-0 is more than we suffered but we accept this defeat and we've taken a lot of information."
Villa remain on nine points in the Champions League. Captain John McGinn told TNT Sports that Barcelona "made the right decisions at the right times" and described the match as "a huge learning curve." He added that Villa have demonstrated competitiveness against elite teams previously.
Villa face Manchester United at Old Trafford in their next fixture.
