Arteta defends tough approach to Dowman after red card appeal dismissed

Arsenal's appeal against Max Dowman's red card from Tuesday's Carabao Cup penalty shootout defeat to Fleetwood Town has been dismissed by an independent panel. The 16-year-old was sent off for retaliating to a heavy challenge from Harrison Neal and will now serve a three-match suspension.

Manager Mikel Arteta expressed disappointment with the ruling, stating the club presented clear evidence of provocation. However, he defended his aggressive confrontation with Dowman as the teenager left the pitch, describing it as a necessary part of the player's development.

Arteta said he had specifically warned Dowman before kick-off about potential provocation from opponents. In a press conference, he explained his tough-love philosophy: "We are not in Disneyland. We are in the Premier League at this level and we look after him so much that you cannot imagine. But at the same time, we're going to demand him like anybody else because he needs to earn the right to play."

The manager drew a parallel to his own upbringing, suggesting that demanding reactions from authority figures had been formative. He added that holding Dowman to the same standard as other players was a matter of fairness to the rest of the squad.
