Enzo Maresca has justified his decision to exclude Phil Foden from Manchester City's four-man captaincy hierarchy, despite acknowledging the England winger as a homegrown talent integral to the club's identity. The Italian manager confirmed that Ruben Dias, Erling Haaland, Marc Guehi, and Gianluigi Donnarumma will form the official leadership group for the 2024-25 campaign, marking a shift in how City approaches its armband responsibilities following a summer of structural change at the Etihad.
Maresca's reasoning centred on prior captaincy experience. Guehi held the armband at Crystal Palace before his summer move, while Donnarumma currently captains Italy's national team. These credentials appeared decisive in Maresca's selection process, even as he praised Foden's qualities as a long-serving academy graduate. "Phil is one of the guys from the house," Maresca told reporters on Friday. "He's not in that group, but for me he's also one of the captains, one of the players that belong to that group." The 26-year-old, who won the PFA Player of the Year award in 2023-24, remains a cornerstone of City's attacking unit despite his exclusion from formal captain duties.
Tactical Flexibility Over Positional Preference
Beyond captaincy, Maresca addressed Foden's recent deployment on the right wing rather than in his preferred central attacking role.
