Pirlo Rejects Italy Job Over Russian Sponsor Row; Maldini

Andrea Pirlo's appointment as Italy national team coach has collapsed in dramatic fashion after federation president Giovanni Malagò vetoed the deal over the midfielder's commercial ties to a Russian betting company. The rejection has sparked a major crisis within the Italian Football Federation, with technical director Paolo Maldini threatening to resign after barely two weeks in post.

Pirlo's Commercial Link Becomes Political Flashpoint

Italy had been without a permanent manager since Gennaro Gattuso's departure in March. After elite coaches Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola declined the role, Maldini identified Pirlo as his preferred candidate. Negotiations had progressed significantly until Sunday evening, when Malagò abruptly halted talks, citing concerns about Pirlo's sponsorship arrangement with a Russian firm. The 113-cap international had undertaken this commercial collaboration during his stint in the United Arab Emirates and maintains it is purely business-related, carrying no political dimension.

In a statement responding to his rejection, Pirlo defended his professional conduct across his playing and coaching career. "Throughout my entire career, I have always carried out my work in full compliance with the laws of the countries in which I have worked," he said. He described the sponsorship dispute as a purely commercial matter that has been misinterpreted, and expressed gratitude towards Maldini and Leonardo for their backing while voicing regret at the sudden collapse of negotiations.

Maldini's Authority Undermined

The fallout has left Maldini furious, according to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport. The legendary defender views Malagò's intervention as a calculated effort to undermine his autonomy, particularly damaging given that he received explicit assurances of full control over coaching appointments when he accepted the technical director role just ten days earlier. This breach of trust has prompted Maldini to consider his position.

A critical meeting between the two officials is scheduled for Monday, where Maldini is expected to formally tender his resignation. The crisis threatens to deepen Italy's coaching uncertainty as the Azzurri prepare for upcoming fixtures in their quest to rebuild following a disappointing recent campaign. The federation now faces the prospect of losing both a manager and its newly appointed technical director in the span of a week.
