Dante has returned to Bayern Munich eleven years after his departure as a player, this time taking charge of the club's reserve team and Under-19s in the UEFA Youth League. The 42-year-old Brazilian defender, who won the 2013 treble under Jupp Heynckes, credits first-team coach Vincent Kompany with fundamentally shifting the club's approach to youth development.
"He is keen to develop young players and let them play," Dante told SPOX ahead of the new season. "That is not how I got to know Bayern. Back then, the young players did not have as many chances as they do now under Vinnie." During Dante's playing years at the Allianz Arena between 2012 and 2015, academy prospects rarely broke through to senior football. The situation has transformed dramatically under Kompany, who provided nine first-team debuts last season alone, building on Lennart Karl's earlier breakthrough.
A New Philosophy Takes Root
Kompany's emphasis on youth integration represents a stark departure from Bayern's historical model of relying on established stars. The current generation of promising talents—including centre-backs Filip Pavic and Cassiano Kiala, midfielder Erblin Osmani, and attackers Maycon Cardozo and Wisdom Mike—now have genuine pathways to competitive football. Dante's primary objective centres on accelerating this progression at reserve level in the fourth-tier Regionalliga Bayern.
The pair maintain close collaboration, speaking regularly by phone and conducting joint training sessions. Most recently, Kompany and Dante led a trial with over 60 players from various age groups, establishing alignment on tactical methods. In his coaching work, Dante intends to mirror Kompany's training drills to ensure seamless transitions between reserve and first-team environments.
Building a Coaching Identity
Dante's arrival came through board member Max Eberl, who previously worked with the Brazilian at Borussia Mönchengladbach. After concluding his playing career at OGC Nice last summer, Dante quickly settled into his new role. He draws tactical inspiration from three elite mentors: Pep Guardiola, Jupp Heynckes, and Lucien Favre, synthesising their philosophies into his own coaching framework.
The reserve side's campaign begins on Friday against SC Eltersdorf, though attention will undoubtedly focus on two upcoming derbies against TSV 1860—traditional rivals that still stir passion among supporters. These fixtures will test whether Dante can maintain Bayern's winning mentality while nurturing the next generation of talent, continuing Kompany's youth-focused revolution at the club.
