Mauricio Pochettino has unveiled the United States Men's National Team roster for the World Cup, confirming 26 players in New York on Tuesday. The announcement came after the entire squad had been leaked over the weekend, but Pochettino made it official during a formal ceremony that clarified the final selections for the tournament.
The roster balances experience with youth, featuring 13 returning players from the 2022 World Cup campaign, including eight who started all four group stage matches. This also marks a significant moment for 13 players making their World Cup debut, bringing fresh energy alongside proven championship pedigree.
Squad Composition and Notable Absences
Pochettino's selections were headlined by established stars Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Tyler Adams, the latter now leading the midfield from English football with AFC Bournemouth. The backline draws heavily from Europe's top five leagues, with Antonee Robinson at Fulham, Joe Scally at Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Chris Richards at Crystal Palace anchoring the defense across multiple continents.
Notable exclusions included Diego Luna, Tanner Tessmann, and Aidan Morris, three players many expected to feature. Dual-national Noahkai Banks, who previously sought time to decide his international commitment, also missed the final cut. MLS candidates Zavier Gozo and Julian Hall both fell short despite late-season pushes.
Experience and Youth Balance
The squad averages just under 27 years old, ranking as the fifth-youngest team the USMNT has sent to a World Cup. Seven players earned their senior debut during this qualification cycle, with Sebastian Berhalter, Alex Freeman, and Matt Freese among the most recent additions from Gold Cup preparation matches.
- 13 returning players from 2022 World Cup
- 13 first-time World Cup participants
- 21 players with CONCACAF silverware (Nations League or Gold Cup)
- Squad features goalkeepers, 11 defenders, 10 midfielders, and 3 forwards
Pochettino emphasized the difficult nature of his selections. "We are confident this is the best group of 26 players to help us achieve success at the World Cup," he stated. "These were very difficult decisions, and we are thankful to all the players who were part of this journey. This group is very focused and ready to give everything they have to represent the United States."
The manager has evaluated 61 players since assuming control in fall 2024, making the narrowing process intensely competitive. Players will now gather in Atlanta for pre-tournament preparation, featuring two friendlies against Senegal and Germany before the World Cup begins on June 12 against Paraguay.
