FC Brentford has significantly accelerated its pursuit of Said El Mala, tabling a fresh offer to 1. FC Cologne that brings the English Premier League club within striking distance of the Bundesliga side's €50 million valuation. The London outfit has submitted a bid comprising a base fee of €40 million plus €5 million in easily achievable performance bonuses, totalling approximately €45 million.
The improved proposal represents a major shift in negotiations that have dragged on for weeks. Cologne's sporting director Thomas Kessler confirmed receipt of the bid, stating: "How they assess him beyond the statistics and whether they are prepared to pay the prices that 1. FC Köln has in mind is open to question. There are many clubs interested in him, not just in England." The package also includes a 15% sell-on clause protecting Cologne's interests should the 19-year-old move again in future.
Brentford's Ultimatum Signals Imminent Deal
Brentford have attached a strict deadline to their proposal, signalling they will withdraw and pursue alternative targets if agreement is not reached within days. This aggressive timeline contrasts sharply with earlier interest from Brighton & Hove Albion, whose €35 million offer failed to materialise and caused protracted delays. The ultimatum suggests Brentford are serious and prepared to walk away rather than engage in prolonged haggling.
El Mala has attracted attention from several elite European clubs, including Chelsea, Newcastle United, and Bayern Munich. The forward delivered a standout performance against Munich on the final Bundesliga matchday, scoring a spectacular solo goal despite Cologne's 1-5 defeat. This season, the German forward has registered 13 goals and five assists across 34 Bundesliga appearances—a strong return for a teenager at a mid-table club.
Notably, Germany national team manager Julian Nagelsmann excluded El Mala from the World Cup squad, reportedly choosing Leroy Sané only on the day of squad announcement.
