Said El Mala Favours Borussia Dortmund Move Over Roma

Said El Mala is reportedly leaning towards joining Borussia Dortmund this summer, according to multiple German media reports. The 19-year-old striker has signalled his preference for a move to the Bundesliga side, giving Dortmund increased confidence in negotiations with 1. FC Cologne, who currently hold his registration.

El Mala's stance represents a significant development in a protracted transfer saga. Sources indicate the player has made clear to Dortmund officials that he could envision himself at Signal Iduna Park and is prepared to sign a five-year contract through 2031. This player preference has removed urgency from Dortmund's position in talks, though substantial differences remain over the transfer fee between the two Bundesliga clubs.

Valuation Gap Remains Central Obstacle

The primary barrier to completing a deal centres on price expectations. Cologne are demanding approximately €50 million for their breakthrough talent, while reports suggest Dortmund's opening bid fell significantly short of that mark. Various figures have circulated—Sky reported a structure of €26 million plus €16 million in add-ons, though only half of that was deemed realistic. BILD cited a €34 million base plus €6 million in bonuses, whilst kicker indicated an offer exceeding €30 million fixed but still well below Cologne's asking price.

Cologne sporting director Thomas Kessler had publicly stated weeks prior that El Mala would remain at the club for the upcoming season if a suitable offer did not materialise. However, the striker's clear preference for Dortmund has potentially shifted dynamics. The Rhineland club even temporarily halted negotiations after reportedly objecting to Dortmund's approach in attempting to influence the player directly.

Roma Interest and Remaining Uncertainty

Despite El Mala's apparent inclination towards Dortmund, AS Roma represent genuine competition for his signature. The Italian side has indicated willingness to spend significantly above €40 million, posing a real alternative if negotiations between Dortmund and Cologne collapse. RB Leipzig have also shown interest, though the Bundesliga rivals are reluctant to meet Cologne's financial demands.

El Mala's breakout season in Germany's top flight elevated his profile considerably. The left-winger appeared in all 34 Bundesliga matches last term, contributing 13 goals and 5 assists despite being only 18 years old. Earlier in the summer, he rejected an offer from Brentford, and he remains contracted to Cologne until 2030, providing the club leverage in ongoing discussions. As negotiations continue between two of Germany's biggest clubs, resolution remains uncertain despite the player's clear preference.
