Iran Relocates to Mexico for 2026 World Cup After US Denial

Iran's national football team will establish their 2026 World Cup base in Tijuana, Mexico, after the United States declined to host the delegation. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the relocation on Monday, revealing that FIFA had approached Mexico to resolve the diplomatic impasse.

The Iranian squad initially planned to use Arizona as their tournament headquarters but faced rejection from the U.S. government amid escalating Middle East tensions. Sheinbaum stated during her daily press briefing: "We have no reason to deny them the possibility of staying in Mexico." The decision allows Team Melli to remain logistically close to their match venues while avoiding the political friction of a stateside camp.

Practical Advantages of the Mexico Move

Mehdi Taj, head of Iran's football federation, emphasized that relocating to Tijuana solves critical administrative hurdles. The squad will now travel directly via Iran Air flights, bypassing visa complications and potential travel restrictions. Despite the change in accommodation, Iran's three group-stage matches remain scheduled across California and Washington state, requiring regular cross-border transit coordinated by FIFA.

Group G presents a challenging path for the Iranian side. Their campaign opens in Los Angeles on June 15 against New Zealand, followed by a crucial fixture against Belgium on June 21. The squad will then travel north to Seattle for their final group encounter with Egypt on June 26. This commuting arrangement, while logistically demanding, preserves Iran's tournament participation that had faced genuine uncertainty following military tensions in February.

The relocation underscores how geopolitical realities intersect with sport at football's highest level. Mexico's willingness to accommodate the Iranian delegation demonstrates FIFA's need for host nation flexibility when diplomatic obstacles arise. As the 2026 World Cup approaches, the federation faces mounting responsibility to ensure safe passage and operational smoothness for all participating nations, regardless of international relations.
