Odsonne Edouard Turns Down World Cup Spot for Haiti on

Odsonne Edouard has revealed why he declined Haiti's invitation to compete at the 2026 World Cup, choosing integrity over international opportunity. The RC Lens forward, who previously starred for Paris Saint-Germain and Celtic, was offered a guaranteed place in the squad but respectfully rejected the offer because he had not earned it through qualifying.

"No, I didn't feel legitimate playing in this World Cup because the players fought to qualify and I wasn't going to show up at the last minute to take advantage of this World Cup," Edouard explained. "If I'm going to play in it, I have to earn it." His stance reflects a rare commitment to team principle in an era where many players switch international allegiances to guarantee major tournament appearances.

Protecting Team Integrity

The 28-year-old's reasoning centered on respecting the qualifying campaign efforts of his teammates. Haiti earned their spot in Group C alongside Brazil, Scotland, and Morocco—a competitive draw for a nation returning to the World Cup for only the second time since their 1974 debut. Edouard felt that parachuting into the squad at the last minute would undermine the dedication of players who had fought through the grueling qualification process.

Beyond national pride, Edouard's decision also reflects strategic thinking about his career trajectory. He remains hopeful of earning a senior cap for France, having represented Les Bleus at Under-21 level. Switching to Haiti would have closed that door permanently, ending any realistic path to French national team selection.

Stellar Season at Lens

Edouard's club form vindicates his measured approach to international football. This season, he scored 14 goals across 36 appearances for Lens, including a decisive contribution to the club's first-ever Coupe de France title—he netted in the 3-1 final victory over Nice. His performances helped Lens secure second place in Ligue 1, guaranteeing Champions League football next season. Haiti will still field attacking reinforcements from Europe, with Sunderland's Wilson Isidor included in their squad for their opening fixture against Scotland on June 14.
