Robbie Keane Backed for Celtic Manager Role Over Ange

Robbie Keane has emerged as a serious contender for the Celtic managerial vacancy, with former England international Michael Gray endorsing the Irish coach as a "great addition" to Parkhead. The Scottish Premiership club is actively searching for a permanent head coach after Martin O'Neill temporarily stabilised the situation mid-season, and Keane's stock has risen considerably following successful spells abroad.

The 45-year-old former Tottenham and Liverpool striker, who had a loan spell at Celtic in 2010, has won titles in Israel with Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hungary with Ferencvaros. Gray believes Keane represents the ideal blend of ambition and fresh thinking for a club facing unexpected pressure domestically. "I think it's the next step for Robbie if that's the way he wants to go," Gray told GOAL exclusively. "It's worked for Steven Gerrard and other ex-players who've gone north. If he can bring his experience from his playing days to his management style, then he's going to be a great addition."

Experience vs. Potential at Paradise

Celtic face a strategic choice between appointing a proven operator or investing in an emerging talent. Ange Postecoglou represents the proven route—his two-year tenure from 2021 to 2023 delivered a Treble and two league titles before his unsuccessful stints at Tottenham and Nottingham Forest. However, Gray suggests Keane's youthful energy and willingness to reshape the squad could provide the spark Celtic needs. "Do they want to go down the experience route, or bring in enthusiasm and maybe take the club in a different direction?" Gray explained. "We've seen challenges from Hearts and Rangers this season—it's not been free and easy."

Celtic must secure silverware consistently to maintain their dominance in Scottish football. A Scottish Premiership title and domestic cup double remain achievable in 2026, but the board's summer recruitment strategy will prove decisive. Whether they choose Keane's ambitious approach or Postecoglou's proven pedigree, the next manager must restore Celtic's undisputed status as Scotland's dominant force.
