Can Tottenham Escape Relegation and Challenge for Top Four

Tottenham face a critical juncture after slipping to 17th place, mirroring the kind of crisis that preceded Manchester United's remarkable rise from 15th to third in a single season. With a final-day showdown against Everton determining their Premier League fate, the question looms: can Spurs engineer their own turnaround under new management, or are structural problems too deep to fix quickly?

Former Spurs defender Alan Hutton has cast doubt on an immediate revival, despite acknowledging United's successful transformation. "From what I've seen this season, I don't see it," Hutton told GOAL. While praising United's cohesion under Michael Carrick, he suggested Tottenham's trajectory will prove far more challenging. The north London side finished 2024-25 in 17th, and further slippage remains possible if results go against them this weekend. Even Ange Postecoglou's Europa League triumph in 2025—ending a 17-year trophy drought—cannot mask underlying dysfunction.

Transfer Strategy Under the Microscope

Tottenham's primary weakness, according to Hutton, is how transfer funds have been deployed. The club has invested substantial capital yet failed to build a cohesive squad capable of sustained Premier League competition. Players signed for £50-60 million have underwhelmed, compounding injuries that ravaged the season. "The numbers they're spending, the players not hitting the heights or ground running—that's definitely hampered them," Hutton explained, highlighting the recurring pattern across two disappointing league campaigns.

If Roberto De Zerbi secures safety, massive recruitment will be essential. Hutton was unequivocal: "Huge money, absolutely huge" is required to rebuild Tottenham's credibility as top-four contenders. The challenge extends beyond finances. Mentality and pressure management appear to undermine performance, suggesting that squad composition alone cannot cure what ails the Lilywhites. The contrast with United, who galvanised under fresh leadership, underscores how cultural renewal matters as much as spending power.

Tottenham's summer transfer window will define whether genuine recovery is possible. With a point likely enough to avoid the Championship trapdoor, their rebuild begins immediately. Yet whether the club can replicate United's 12-month ascent remains deeply uncertain—and increasingly dependent on recruitment wisdom rather than mere expenditure.
