"To be honest, the system the manager tried to play didn't suit Eintracht Frankfurt," Burkardt said bluntly, though he later softened his stance by noting the squad itself failed to execute the gameplan effectively.
Tension between Burkardt and Riera had been simmering for weeks. The German international's agent reportedly filed a formal complaint with sporting director Markus Krösche after the coach passed criticism about the striker's fitness and defensive contribution through an assistant. The conflict escalated dramatically on the penultimate matchday against Borussia Dortmund, when Burkardt—recently dropped to the bench—allegedly hurled a Spanish expletive at Riera immediately after scoring a substitute goal in the 87th minute. Riera responded by fining the player €20,000, a punishment he confirmed publicly days later.

Despite Burkardt's two penalty conversions in the Stuttgart finale, Eintracht finished eighth in the table, missing European qualification for the first time since 2020.
