Albert Riera Eyes Ludogorets Razgrad Return After Frankfurt

Albert Riera is set to leave Eintracht Frankfurt after a turbulent spell at the German club, with Ludogorets Razgrad reportedly keen to install the Spanish coach as their next manager. The Bulgarian side, record holders of the nation's domestic title, are searching for leadership after slipping from their throne for the first time in 14 years.

Riera's time in the Bundesliga proved disastrous. His 14-game tenure at Frankfurt was marked by internal turmoil and erratic press conferences that undermined the club's season. Frankfurt sporting director Krösche publicly acknowledged his misjudgement in appointing the 44-year-old mid-season, admitting he had abandoned his core principle of hiring only managers with top-flight experience and league knowledge. The Hessian club ultimately missed European qualification as a direct result of the managerial chaos.

Ludogorets Face Unprecedented Challenge

Ludogorets' collapse is historic in its own right. The Bulgarian powerhouse failed to claim a 15th consecutive title—a feat that would have surpassed Skonto Riga's 14-year streak (1991–2004) and Lincoln Red Imps' run (2003–2016). Instead, Levski Sofia were crowned champions in May, leaving Ludogorets to face an unwanted demotion to Conference League qualifying rounds. Per-Mathias Högmo is expected to step down as manager following the disappointment.

The scale of Ludogorets' decline extends beyond the league title. The club were eliminated from the Bulgarian Cup semi-finals by CSKA Sofia immediately after their championship loss, compounding what has been a calamitous campaign for the Bulgarian businessman-backed side. Winning just one match in five during the championship round exposed cracks in their dominance.

Riera's Questionable Track Record

Whether Riera can deliver a revival in Sofia remains highly questionable. His Frankfurt experience suggests a manager struggling to adapt to new environments or manage internal dynamics effectively. His appointment at Ludogorets would represent a significant gamble for a club desperate to reclaim their status as the continent's elite domestic force. For context, Bayern Munich hold the Bundesliga record with 11 consecutive titles (2013–2023), making Ludogorets' 14-year run all the more remarkable—and its ending all the more jarring.

Frankfurt, meanwhile, continue their hunt for a replacement. Matthias Jaissle, currently contracted to Al Ahly in Saudi Arabia, and Adi Hütter, the Austrian who previously managed Frankfurt from 2018 to 2021, are among the leading candidates. The club's next managerial appointment will prove crucial as they seek to restore Champions League aspirations.
