Filipe Luis Emerges as Top Candidate to Replace Hjulmand at

Bayer Leverkusen are preparing a managerial change as Kasper Hjulmand's brief tenure at the BayArena moves toward an end. The former Denmark national team coach faces the axe following a damaging 3-1 defeat to Stuttgart that has effectively ended the club's hopes of securing Champions League qualification. Despite holding a contract through 2027, the board has decided to part ways with the 54-year-old less than a full season after his appointment.

Hjulmand arrived at Leverkusen in late August, replacing Erik ten Hag just two matchdays into the campaign. While Ten Hag's departure was sudden, Hjulmand's struggles have proven equally problematic for a club that won the Bundesliga title in 2024 and operates under elite expectations. Internal doubts about his tactical fit have mounted over recent months, with club officials now convinced a fresh approach is needed to restore winning momentum.

Filipe Luis and Michel Lead the Shortlist

Filipe Luis, the 40-year-old former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid defender, has emerged as a surprising frontrunner for the role. Now a free agent, Luis recently concluded a successful managerial spell with Flamengo, where he secured both the Brazilian league title and the Copa Libertadores in 2024 before departing in March. His trophy-laden résumé and proven ability to win immediately appeal strongly to Leverkusen's hierarchy.

Club officials Fernando Carro and Simon Rolfes view Luis as an ideal candidate, particularly given his tactical intelligence and deep understanding of European football. The recruitment team had previously attempted to sign him during his playing days, so the prospect of acquiring him as manager represents continuity of vision. His availability as an unattached manager removes any complicated transfer negotiations.

Spanish coach Michel, currently managing Girona, represents the alternative option. The 50-year-old has built Girona into a competitive force since 2021, though the La Liga club currently finds itself battling relegation with only five points separating eighth from 19th place. Despite this precarious league position, Michel's attacking philosophy aligns with Leverkusen's traditional playing style, and his departure at season's end appears inevitable regardless of Girona's final standing.

The High Standards at the BayArena

Leverkusen's willingness to move decisively underscores the elevated standards established by their historic 2024 championship. Finishing outside the top four represents an unacceptable outcome for a club of their resources and European ambitions. The early replacement of Ten Hag was manageable, but Hjulmand's failure to stabilize the project and secure Champions League football has forced the board's hand.

Whether the club turns to Luis's proven winning mentality or Michel's tactical innovation, a significant restructuring of the squad and coaching structure appears certain. Leverkusen must reestablish consistency at the top of the Bundesliga and compete seriously for European titles next season.
