Xabi Alonso Set to Reject Chelsea Over Board Interference

Xabi Alonso is expected to turn down Chelsea's managerial offer due to boardroom control issues at Stamford Bridge, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio. The Blues have been searching for a permanent manager following Liam Rosenior's sacking last month, with the club facing a difficult rebuilding project after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign that could result in a bottom-half Premier League finish.

Di Marzio highlighted that Alonso has witnessed the challenges faced by previous Chelsea managers in their dealings with ownership. "He knows what happened to Enzo Maresca when he was the manager," Di Marzio explained. "The board wants to have influence on decisions which normally fall to the manager. They want to decide which players should be substituted during a match and all that stuff, which Alonso can't accept at all." This interference in tactical and personnel decisions represents a fundamental barrier to the Spaniard's acceptance of the role.

Andoni Iraola Emerges as Alternative

Rather than pursue Alonso further, Chelsea appears likely to target Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola as a more realistic candidate. Di Marzio believes Iraola has a "good chance" of securing the position, though the club must first resolve its internal structural problems. "Xabi Alonso is waiting for another offer," Di Marzio noted, "but of course, Chelsea will try, but he won't accept it."

The situation underscores a pattern at Chelsea, where managerial authority has been compromised by extensive board involvement in day-to-day football decisions. Since Todd Boehly's acquisition of the club in 2022, Chelsea has cycled through multiple managers, struggling to establish a coherent long-term vision. Alonso's reluctance signals that elite-tier managerial talent remains wary of the power dynamics at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea's next appointment will require addressing both the squad composition and the governance model that has hindered recent attempts at stability.
