Borussia Dortmund have officially secured their first major summer acquisition with the arrival of Joane Gadou from RB Salzburg. The 19-year-old centre-back has passed his medical and is set to be unveiled as early as Monday, marking a crucial defensive reinforcement for the Bundesliga club.
The transfer was finalized at a fee of €19.5 million plus up to €4.5 million in performance-based add-ons, according to reports from Bild. The deal came after initial negotiations where Salzburg sought a higher asking price of approximately €25 million plus €4–6 million in bonuses. Sporting director Ole Book and Lars Ricken moved swiftly to resolve the impasse, ultimately securing the defender at a more favorable rate for Dortmund.
Addressing Defensive Depth Crisis
The signing arrives at a critical moment for Dortmund's backline. With Niklas Süle retired, Emre Can nursing a long-term injury, and uncertainty surrounding Nico Schlotterbeck's future at the club, the Black and Yellows faced an urgent need for defensive cover. Gadou's arrival directly addresses these pressing concerns ahead of next season's domestic and European campaigns.
The 1.95-metre defender brings considerable pedigree for his age. He made 33 competitive appearances for Salzburg this season, including several in the Europa League. Originally joining Salzburg from Paris Saint-Germain's academy in 2024, Gadou has developed rapidly in the Austrian Bundesliga. Michael Unverdorben, deputy sports editor at Salzburger Nachrichten, praised the youngster's potential, stating he is "already further ahead at this age than Dayot Upamecano was back then," highlighting his exceptional trajectory in central defence.
- Strong in the tackle and in aerial duels
- Possesses the physical and technical attributes required for international football
- 33 competitive appearances for Salzburg across all competitions in 2023–24
- Long-term monitoring by Dortmund's scouting network, dating back to spring under former sporting director Sebastian Kehl
Gadou's farewell message on Instagram confirmed his departure, acknowledging the club's staff, coaches, and teammates while expressing gratitude for his time in Austria. His move to Dortmund signals the club's intent to rebuild their defensive infrastructure and compete at the highest level in both the Bundesliga and European competition next season.
