Borussia Dortmund have completed their first major summer acquisition, securing 19-year-old centre-back Joane Gadou from RB Salzburg. The German club finalised the deal after negotiations with the Austrian side, with the defender signing a five-year contract at Signal Iduna Park.
The transfer fee settled at €19.5 million plus €4.5 million in performance-based add-ons, according to multiple reports. Gadou successfully completed his medical on Monday and becomes BVB's first major reinforcement ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. The 1.95-metre defender made 33 competitive appearances for Salzburg this season, including several outings in European competition.
Filling a Critical Defensive Gap
Dortmund's backline has been decimated by injury and departures heading into the new season. Niklas Süle retired from professional football, while Emre Can remains sidelined with a long-term injury. The status of Nico Schlotterbeck remains unclear, creating an urgent need for defensive depth. Gadou's arrival directly addresses these concerns.
Sporting director Lars Ricken praised the signing's immediate potential. "Joane is a modern, physically strong centre-back with good build-up play and exceptional pace," Ricken stated. "He represents an ideal addition to our defence." Ole Book, the club's other senior official, echoed the confidence, highlighting Gadou's technical abilities and room for development.
Tracking a Rising Talent
Dortmund have monitored Gadou since his time at Paris Saint-Germain's youth academy before he joined Salzburg in 2024. The centre-back impressed Austrian observers immediately, with one analyst comparing his current trajectory favourably to Dayot Upamecano at the same age. According to expert assessment, Gadou excels in tackling, aerial dominance, and possesses the attributes required for top-tier European football.
Gadou expressed enthusiasm about his new challenge. "I'm delighted to be part of the BVB family and can't wait to wear the black and yellow shirt," he said in an official statement. The teenager's physical attributes, technical security, and demonstrated consistency in the Austrian Bundesliga and Europa League suggest he can adapt quickly to the demands of the Bundesliga.
