Gianni Infantino has officially confirmed he will seek re-election as FIFA president in 2027, according to a statement released by world football's governing body on Sunday. The 56-year-old administrator's decision comes amid intense scrutiny over his failed proposal to privatize commercial rights to major tournaments, including the World Cup.
Infantino's announcement, originally made in April, remains unchanged despite mounting pressure from continental confederations and member associations. UEFA, AFC, and CONCACAF all withdrew their support for the president after his controversial privatization scheme collapsed in early August. The Swiss administrator faced additional legal jeopardy when UEFA initiated criminal proceedings against him in late August over the abandoned plan to sell shares in FIFA's flagship competition to private investors.
Opposition and Path Forward
The opposition to Infantino extends beyond confederation level. Individual member associations, including the Dutch football federation (KNVB), distanced themselves from the president. Discussions among regional bodies suggest a potential motion of no confidence could emerge, though removing Infantino presents a significant procedural hurdle. An extraordinary FIFA Congress session would be required, demanding support from at least 43 of FIFA's 211 member associations—a threshold not yet reached by opposition groups.
FIFA formally abandoned the privatization proposal in early August, releasing a statement emphasizing its commitment to unity: "Our goal has always been to unite and improve. That is why this proposal will not go ahead." This reversal, however, has done little to restore confidence in Infantino's leadership among football's global stakeholders.
The presidential election race formally opens November 18, with the presidential vote scheduled for March 2027 in Rabat, Morocco. So far, no rival candidate has publicly declared their candidacy, leaving Infantino's path to another term potentially clear—if opposition federations cannot mobilize sufficient support for removal before the nomination deadline arrives.
