Ronald Koeman's agent Rob Jansen has pushed back against criticism directed solely at the Dutch national team manager following the Netherlands' penalty shootout elimination by Morocco in the 2022 World Cup round of 16. Jansen told Algemeen Dagblad that attributing the disappointment entirely to Koeman ignores the broader institutional failures that plagued the campaign in Qatar.
"This was a collective disappointment, from the players, from the entire coaching staff and from the technical directorate as well," Jansen said in defence of his 63-year-old client. The agent acknowledged that Koeman believed deeply in the project, stating the coach felt confident about winning the tournament. However, Jansen revealed a softer challenge: the relentless media scrutiny and negativity surrounding the team took a psychological toll.
Tactical Shift Against Morocco
The most controversial decision came in the knockout stage when Koeman abandoned the 4-3-3 formation that had served the team throughout group play and switched to a 5-3-2 setup against Morocco. This defensive reshaping triggered an avalanche of criticism after the elimination. Koeman later justified the change, arguing that defensive vulnerabilities in previous matches warranted tactical adjustment rather than stubborn consistency.
Yet journalist Mike Verweij from De Telegraaf reported that the five-defender system was not purely Koeman's invention. According to Verweij, Virgil van Dijk and assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooij advocated for the formation change, suggesting player input influenced the tactical decision. This detail undercuts the narrative that Koeman alone bore responsibility for the strategic gamble.
Jansen acknowledged Koeman's frustration with media cynicism, hinting at signs of burnout that affected the coach's mental state during the tournament. "Sometimes he got a bit tired of you lot—of the media, of the cynicism and the negativity," Jansen explained. Despite stepping down after the World Cup exit, Koeman's legacy with the national team remains complex, mixing qualification achievement with tournament disappointment. Xavi Hernández has since replaced him, making his debut in a Nations League fixture against Germany on 24 September, marking a new chapter for Dutch football.
