Koeman's reasoning centred on Frimpong's hamstring troubles throughout the domestic campaign. The defender managed only 35 appearances across all competitions this season, contributing two goals and two assists before his omission. "It's true that he's been injured quite often this season," Koeman explained. "Against Ecuador, he came on as a substitute but had to come off again very quickly. That's a physical issue, but I've also chosen someone else to play on the right wing: Crysencio Summerville. I like that sort of player who is reliable on the pitch."
Tactical Adjustments and Midfield Concerns
The Netherlands face significant midfield disruption with Xavi Simons and Jerdy Schouten both sidelined by ACL injuries. Rather than gamble on untested youth, Koeman resisted calls to include prospects Kees Smit and Luciano Valente, instead leaning on established defensive stability. "When Schouten is out of the picture, you look at your midfielders, and you can't compare Smit or Valente to Marten De Roon or Schouten," the manager noted. "He's a real defensive midfielder, a lock on the door."
Fitness uncertainty clouds the final preparations, particularly regarding Jurrien Timber. The Arsenal centre-back remains a major doubt for Saturday's Champions League final and potentially the World Cup itself, with standby options Ian Maatsen and Lutsharul Geertruida on alert. Elsewhere, Justin Kluivert returns to contention following surgery, impressing Koeman during recent training sessions despite limited competitive action.
The selection of Wout Weghorst over prolific Premier League striker Zian Flemming—who netted 11 times this season—also drew scrutiny. Koeman defended the decision by highlighting Weghorst's unique value as an impact substitute. "He has his role in the team. He's very useful in that role. I can't see anyone else who can do that," he stated.
