The investment marks a significant moment for the Italian side, which secured promotion after spending one year outside Italy's top division. Leiweke will assume a prominent operational role at the Venetian club alongside his daughter Francesca Bodie.
The partnership emerged through an unexpected connection: Leiweke was introduced to Venezia's ownership by Canadian rapper Drake, whom he met while overseeing Toronto's Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment in 2013. Drake himself holds an investment stake in Venezia and praised the partnership in a statement: "Tim and Francesca are incredibly good at what they do. They know what success looks like and how to build it. We've done it before, and I'm excited to bring that energy to Venice."
A Track Record of Soccer Success
Leiweke's sports investment portfolio spans multiple continents and disciplines. His early involvement with LA Galaxy helped facilitate the historic signing of David Beckham to MLS, fundamentally transforming the league's global profile. He later invested heavily in Toronto FC, establishing himself as a key figure in North American soccer development. Beyond football, Leiweke has held stakes in major hockey franchises including the Toronto Maple Leafs and Los Angeles Kings, demonstrating deep expertise in building championship-caliber organizations.
His appointment at Venezia comes after a complex period in his career. Leiweke resigned as CEO of Oak View Group following a Department of Justice indictment related to bid-rigging allegations. He received a presidential pardon from Donald Trump in December 2025, clearing the way for his return to prominent business ventures.
Venezia's American Ambitions
Venezia has already embraced American soccer talent and investment. Gianluca Busio, a midfielder with multiple USMNT caps, joined the club from Sporting Kansas City in 2021 and has become a regular starter for the Serie A side. The club is executing an ambitious stadium development program designed to strengthen its infrastructure for sustained success. Venezia is constructing a primary stadium with nearly 20,000 seats alongside a secondary 10,000-seat arena, with construction beginning in October 2025 and a targeted summer 2027 opening date.
