Riyad Mahrez's search for a new club has hit another setback. The 35-year-old Algerian winger, now a free agent after Al-Ahli terminated his contract unexpectedly, has been publicly rejected by Serie A side Como. Sporting director Carlo Alberto Ludi confirmed the Italian club has no interest in signing the former Manchester City star during the current transfer window.
Mahrez's situation has spiralled dramatically in recent weeks. Al-Ahli, the Saudi Arabian powerhouse, shocked the winger by cancelling his deal despite it running until June 2027. The Jeddah club had even agreed to extend his contract before he departed for the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with Algeria. The termination was executed within a contractual clause that permitted early exit before the end of June 2026, leaving Mahrez with no legal recourse. During his three-year spell at Al-Ahli, the winger made 122 appearances, scoring 37 goals and providing 50 assists, including back-to-back AFC Champions League Elite titles and the Saudi Super Cup.
Multiple Clubs Circle Mahrez
Despite Como's dismissal, Mahrez is not without options. Reports suggest several clubs across multiple continents are monitoring the situation. MLS franchise Chicago Fire, Saudi rivals Al-Uroba, Qatari outfit Al-Sadd, and Turkish heavyweight Fenerbahce have all been linked with the Algerian. French Ligue 1 club Le Havre, Serie A's Atalanta, and English Championship side Coventry City are also in contention, according to press sources.
The veteran's international career also hangs in the balance. His early exit from World Cup preparations raises questions about his future role in Algeria's squad as they continue their qualifying campaign. At 35, Mahrez faces a critical decision about where to continue his career and whether a top-tier league remains realistic or a step down to a competitive secondary league offers the best path forward.
